| Trinity
is an important term for any Christian to know; yet it is
a confusing and often misunderstood. Do we have three Gods
or just one? It is a good question to ask if you haven’t
asked yourself before. The definition for trinity is God in
three persons, though trinity is not a term from the bible.
Father
= Son = Holy Spirit
At
the same time Father is not the Son or Holy Spirit,
Son is not the Father or Holy Spirit,
Holy Spirit is not the Son or the Father.
Though
Bible clearly says that everything was crated through the
Son of God (John 1:3), it is not saying that only the Son
of God was involved. It is clear from Genesis 1:26, Let us
make man in our own image. This verse is a good explanation
for trinity because the verse says,
“Then God said, "Let us make man in our image,
in our likeness.”
If you
notice the verse carefully it says God said (singular). Let
us make man in our image and in our likeness (plural). If
you think the royal plurality is used. Read further.
Bible
clearly teaches that there is only one God in three persons.
All three persons are called God.
Deuteronomy
6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD
is one.”
Exodus
20:3, is clearly warning the people of Israel to have no other
God. That is the first and foremost commandment of God. Watch
this verse very carefully,
Isaiah
43:10 “Before me no god was formed, nor will there be
one after me.”
This means
there was no God before God and there will be none after Him.
Exodus 20:4 forbids, worshiping anything or anyone other than
God. Then why would God say,
“Therefore
God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name
that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every
knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11).
God the
father not only said that, but he also said that will glorify
Himself (Father). Is God contradicting himself, definitely
not?
Father
is God:
Psalm 89:26 says,
“He will call out to me; You are my Father, my God,
the Rock my Savior.”
Son
is God:
“The word was God.” (John
1:1).
Holy
Spirit is God:
“Then Peter said, Ananias, how
is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied
to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the
money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to
you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t
the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such
a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.” (Acts
5:3-4).
Now please
don’t misunderstand that we have three Gods. We are
monotheistic and not polytheistic. Though this is hard to
understand, it will not invalidate the truth. We don’t
have to understand something to accept it. Most people don’t
know how rockets work, but that doesn’t mean that the
rockets are dummies and don’t work.
For people
who think that Jesus is not God, only God can forgive sins
like the Jews claim in this verse, Jesus forgave sins. “The
Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves,
“Who
is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins
but God alone?” (Luke 5:21).
He was
worshipped according to Matthew 2:2, Matthew 2:11, Matthew
14:33, Matthew 28:9, Luke 24:52. These are some of the scriptures
saying that Jesus was worshipped from His childhood, when
he was in this world 2000 years.
Steven
Prayed to Jesus and Committed his sprite in His hands
Acts
7:59 says, “As they were stoning Stephen, he called
out, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
Acts
7:69 says, “Then he fell to his knees and cried out
in a loud voice, Lord, do not hold this sin against them;
and when he said this, he fell asleep.”
All 24
elders, angels and all living creatures prostrated in worship
Rev 5:8
says, “When He (Jesus) had taken the book, the four
living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before
the Lamb (Jesus), each one holding a harp and golden bowls
full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.”
Rev 5:13
says, “And every created thing which is in heaven and
on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things
in them, I heard saying, To Him who sits on the throne, and
to the Lamb, [be] blessing and honor and glory and dominion
forever and ever.”
In Luke
4:8 Jesus Christ said to the devil, “Jesus answered,
it is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.”
If Jesus
told the devil that only God is worthy of worship and if he
accepted the worship as an ordinary man, angel or prophet
then what is the difference between Him and the devil.
Though
Holy Spirit is never worshipped in the bible, he is God (Acts
5:3-4). He is not a force like some people define Him, but
has a separate personality.
Ephesians
4:30 says, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,
with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
Why would
a force be grieved? Scripture is clear that when Holy Spirit
comes upon people, he will not talk about himself but about
the Son of God. That clearly says that he has something to
say about himself, but humble enough to talk about the Son
of God. If you want to know more about Holy Spirit, “Good
morning Holy Spirit” by Benny Hinn is an informative
book to read.
Jesus
is not inferior to God:
Christ was never created. When Colossians 1:15 says, “The
first born of all creations”. It means it was the first
decision by God the father before creations. God decided to
function in three forms and his first form is Jesus Christ.
He made this decision to make relationship with man. If he
was the first creation then how Jesus could say,
“I
am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning
and the End.” (Revelation 22:13).
Another
misunderstood verse in the bible is,
“So that they may be one as we are one.” (John
17:11).
Jehovah’s
Witness people use this verse to oppose trinity. In this verse
Jesus Christ is talking about unity not trinity, though it
rhymes. Jesus Christ has all power to do everything against
God the father and Holy Spirit. Similarly each member of trinity
is capable of that and still does things in one accord. That
is what he is talking about here in this verse. Jesus Christ
has life in himself just like the Father.
John 5:26
says, “For as the Father has life in himself, so he
has granted the Son to have life in himself.”
That is
the reason he had to give up the spirit (Matthew 27:50). No
one else had given up their spirits but the spirit goes to
God in obedience to God.
Don’t
believe the deceiving difference between God and Son of God.
Son of God is God himself. He is unique from other sons of
God mentioned in the bible (Job 1:6). Other sons of God (creations)
mentioned in the bible are never worshipped.
Hebrews
1:6 says, “And again, when God brings his firstborn
into the world, he says, Let all God’s angels worship
him.”
This is
the uniqueness of Christ Jesus.
Philippians
2:6 say, He is equal with God. He is saying, “You heard
me say, I am going away and I am coming back to you. If you
loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I” (John 14:28), which
is showing His submission to God the father, (Decision maker
of the triune nature) which means He could have disobeyed
Him, since He is a separate entity.
We should
pray to Father in Jesus name, forgiven through His Son Jesus
Christ’s blood, guided by the Holy Spirit. But the triune
God can dwell in you.
John 14:23
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves
me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and
we will come to him and make our home with him.”
I know
this is a tough subject, that is why 1 Timothy 3:16 says,
“Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great:
He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen
by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on
in the world, was taken up in glory.” It is a mystery,
but if we don’t believe it, then we will misunderstand
everything in the bible. Don’t we believe that earth
is hanging in the galaxy without any support? If we can believe
that, we can accept “Trinity” also.
